Cambridge’s Homerton College has invested in a new, award-winning dining hall that captures the history and tradition of the college in a sustainable, future-looking form while hosting up to 300 diners at a time. The Guardian’s architecture critic praised the building, writing that “The new space, while using the rectangular plan and timber vault of a traditional hall, is both light and full of light.” Homerton College recognized that the busy new dining hall needed a grease solution that was as smart, efficient, and sustainable as the building itself.
The chosen solution involved implementing two Big Dipper automatic grease recovery units, to sit inside the kitchen, beneath the main grease producing equipment, to minimise the amount of grease that would reach the external grease interceptors, effectively addressing the problem at source. Magnete played a crucial role in assisting with the selection process to ensure smooth kitchen drainage operations, as they had done in a similar process several years earlier as part of the grease solution to the Kitchens in Homerton College’s Great Hall. “They helped us understand the pros and cons of each solution and our Big Dipper W200 ISE units save us time and money every month.” The two units have been in operation since early 2023, achieving the following results:
• Reducing the grease going to drains by up to 8 litres per day.
• Increasing the service intervals of the underground grease interceptors.
• Significantly reducing the risk of blockages from fat, oil, and grease.
