Fit for FOG (Fat, Oil & Grease) and the Circular Economy
Since establishing Binder Ltd. in 1964, Wallace Binder has stayed on the cutting edge to lead his company into new markets. He wasn’t about to let grease clog his vision for growth.
From its origins of servicing and installing septic tanks, Binder Ltd. has expanded to handle domestic wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and grease interceptors. All are supported by an in-house water treatment plant that processes waste from its domestic and commercial clients.
Always looking for the most innovative solutions for these clients, Binder began selling Big Dipper Automatic Grease Traps in the early 2000s. More recently, the company added Trapzilla Super Capacity Grease Interceptors. (“Big Dipper and Trapzilla are the types of innovative products our customers need,” says Wallace. “Both are relatively compact and highly efficient at managing grease.”)
Little did he know how valuable the Trapzilla and Big Dipper lines would be for his business.
As Binder’s grease trap servicing business grew, so did the volume of FOG passing through its water treatment plant. It began putting a strain on the bacteria used to treat the water. The bacteria began to work slower. As a result, plant operators had to spend valuable time adjusting the process, as the facility consumed more energy to compensate for the sluggish bacteria.
Binder contracted with a business that recycles fats, oils, and grease (FOG) into biodiesel. Binder Ltd. now recycles more than 30 tons of grease every month. Much of that material comes from the Trapzilla and Big Dipper units it services. Its water treatment plant is free of FOG and more efficient than ever before. Grease recycling has become a lucrative revenue stream.
